MONTESPERTOLI CHIANTI WINE
Thanks to its mite climate, good position and territory, the area of Montespertoli is devoted to the vineyards cultivation. This area includes a wine cultivated territory of about 1.600 ha and about 1.400 ha are DOCG cultivated. The annual production of grapes is of about hl. 140.110 and 91.152 DOCG.
June 1, 1998 a historical date for Montespertoli vine-growers: the first Chianti Montespertoli wine bottle was uncorked. The national wine committee of the Ministry for Agricultural Policies in fact acknowledged, with decree dated 08/09/97, the Chianti Montespertoli Subarea . The Chianti Montespertoli D.O.C.G (controlled and guaranteed name of origin) provides for theuse of four different species of grapes, among which the prevailing one is Sangiovese (from 75 to 100%), which gives life to wines with a ruby-red colour verging on garnet with ageing, a bouquet of wild berries and violets, and a good, elegant and velvety structure. Along with Sangiovese, there can be Canaiolo (up to 10%), Trebbiano and Malvasia (up to 10%); other authorised species of grapes can be used up to a maximum of 10%. The regulations provide for important production limitations: 80 quintals of grapes, equivalentto 56 hectolitres of wine per hectare, minimum alcoholic strength of 11 degrees for the grapes, mininum alcoholic strength of 12 degrees for vintage wine at the time of consumption, 12.50 degrees for reserve wine. The wine can be put on the market on June 1 of the year following the grape-harvest. With decree of 27/09/97, another jewel has been added to the Montespertoli wines: theVin Santo del Chianti Montespertoli D.O.C, the traditional wine of all vinegrowers.
